Meissen Antique Porcelain Shop

About Meissen ...

Meissen Cherub FigureAugustus II The Strong; Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (1670-1733), loved Chinese porcelain (then named white gold) and moved mountains to form what became Meissen Porcelain.

Meissen was originally situated in Dresden, but in 1710 the factory was moved to the Albrechtsburg in Meissen where it was more secure, and where it was easier to guard the secret of hard paste porcelain.

There have been many other changes throughout its history, but the Meissen factory is still operational and is still producing the worlds' most expensive porcelain

Meissen Base Marks

The famous Blue Crossed Swords mark of Meissen Porcelain is probably one of the most recognisable porcelain marks, however not all blue crossed swords marks are Meissen.

Art Deco Cut Glass DecanterSimilarly, The Meissen Augustus Rex or AR mark, which was only ever used on porcelain for the Court of Elector August the Strong, is a well recognised porcelain mark. However, just like the blue crossed swords, it too has been imitated and even forged, in an effort to pass inferior quality porcelain as top quality Meissen Porcelain.
